Home Cooking around the World

Not surprisingly, every Peace Corps volunteer has stories to tell about food: where to find it, how to prepare it, and when to eat it.

From sharing your first meal with your new host family to partaking in a community feast, food is absolutely fundamental to the Peace Corps experience. Life in the Peace Corps can be much more than coping without pizza delivery or full-service supermarkets. It may be knowing never to use your left hand when offering someone food, or avoiding the corner of a table when sitting down to a meal, or always dribbling a bit of your drink on the ground before raising it to your mouth. The Home Cooking area of the Peace Corps Festival program features a wide variety of traditional food items prepared by cooks and Peace Corps volunteers from many different countries. There you may learn not only new recipes, but also the role food plays in family and community life.
