Signing our Festival guest book is symbolically important on several levels. First, it means you are welcome here, which was not always the case for Asian Pacific Americans. Second, signing it vertically reminds us that several Asian languages are written from top to bottom. Finally, the medium of wood ensures our signatures will eventually wear away. However, the memories created here will affect us and our global relations for years to come.
