The Kallawaya people, who make their home high in the Bolivian Andes, developed intricate systems of traditional medicinal practices and belief. These practices, steeped in a specialized vocabulary, help keep the Kallawaya language alive. At the 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Kallawaya participants involved the audience in a ritual blessing for women.
