Colombia is located in a strategically important corner of South America between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans. From south to north, the Andean chain ascends from Chile and opens into an impressive triple range of high mountains interspersed by two valleys. From coast to coast, extensive lowlands stretch towards the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, into the broad eastern plains, and the Amazonian rainforest.
