The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, from its inception, has been conceived as a way of helping people keep their culture alive and well. Seen in relation to the Smithsonian's museums, the Festival has stressed living cultural traditions rather than artifacts. While curated and researched, the Festival has relied upon substantive partnerships with the people, communities, and institutions being represented.
