In Somalia, Rukia Hussein grew up surrounded by the bounteous expression of buraanbur, a tradition of women's sung poetry and dance. In the 1960s, she was a leader with her husband in the Somali struggle for independence. She served as a diplomat during the transition to Somali independence.
